Training was conducted in 2 Regional Training Centers, where the participants learned to assemble and use 2 different medium sized models of Umoya Dryers:
a Hybrid Solar (left) and an Off-Grid Chimney (right)
The Chimney Dryer was preferred by users, because it has no moving parts, is simple and works well in dry, sunny weather.
The Hybrid Dryer is well suited for areas with less stable weather and where security for the solar panels and battery can be provided.
Umoya Dryers are built from Polycarbonate sheet providing a clean and durable space that efficiently absorbs solar radiation and converts it to drying heat. Aluminum and galvanized steel profiles provide a durable, strong structure for the dryers.
Inside the drying chamber, the product is protected from UV radiation and external contaminants.
Drying temperatures remain below 60C protecting color an
Hands-on training in processing of fruit and vegetables focused on Good Manufacturing Practices, best practice for solar drying, packaging and the rules for sustainable commercialization
A large variety of fruit and veg were processed, dried, tasted, packaged, labelled and taken back to the communites for demonstration
Dried products are adequately packed, labelled and sold with profit in the informal market in the communities.
Umoya Dryers trained users in simple packaging techniques and diverse product configurations
